The How and the How You’ll Know

Your brakes work using hydraulic fluid force and friction. Although you would probably have a hard time stopping a car by your physical means, just a small amount of pressure on the brake sets in motion a chain of events that slow your vehicle in a manner that makes one begin to take the ability to stop for granted. The depressed brake pedal moves a piston and lever that, in turn, sends brake fluid through lines from the master cylinder to the cylinders at the wheels. The force continues the brake fluid’s work, allowing the brake calipers to move the brake pads into place against the rotors (discs). Rotors are the large round metal plates located at each wheel when an auto is equipped with disc brakes. If your vehicle has drum brakes (usually because it’s an older model or has drum brakes on the rear wheels to conserve costs), everything works the same except that brake shoes are moved into place against the drums turning inside the wheels. Thus, a minimal amount of physical effort translates into your transportation’s capability to stop. If there’s a problem with your braking system, you’ll likely notice some telling symptoms. One obvious sign is an illuminated dashboard brake (ABS) light. Another, of course, is a noted increase in stopping distance. Other signals include a vibration during braking, pulling to one sign during braking, and odd noises (squealing, squeaking, or grinding).
